President’s Day – Washington & Jefferson Were Beer Lovers

    By admin | February 16, 2009

Today is President’s Day, but did you know that some of our early Founding Fathers and later Presidents, were beer lovers?

George Washington, was not only a beer lover but a homebrewer as well. One of his well known recipes for porter has been passed down through the homebrewing network.

Thomas Jefferson was also an avid brewer and beer enthusiast. Thomas Jefferson’s wife Martha oversaw periodic brewing operations. From her first arrival at Monticello in 1772, she recorded in her account book the brewing of a fifteen-gallon cask of small beer about every two weeks. For about 30 years after Martha’s death there is no record of brewing at Monticello.

Valentine’s Day Is Right Around The Corner

    By admin | January 29, 2009

Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday this year…Can you imagine the wait in line for your sweetheart’s favorite restuarant? Instead you could opt for staying home with Chocolates and Champagne. Or even if you decide to brave the crowds you could have the champagne chilled and waiting as a surprise when you arrive back at your destination. Every Tuesday is Wine Day,plan ahead and save 10%. She will definately think you have things under control and be delighted you are thinking so far ahead. So guys get some brownie points(girls too) and stop in and see us for your Valentine’s Day Champagne.

    Selecting a Champagne:

The most common is the ASTI or SPUMANTE:a very fruitty sparkler that can be up to five times sweeter than a brut.

BRUT: Crisp, clean, very dry wine: contains almost no sugar.

EXTRA DRY: despite it’s name, it is not as dry as the Brut. It has a hint of sweetness.

EXTRA BRUT: Bone dry; the driest of the dry.

SEMI-DRY or DEMI SEC: a friutty, sweeter wine; Somewhat drier alternative to Spumante.

BLANC de BLANC: Means “White of White” and is made only of Chardonnay; Lighter in style.

BLANC de NOIR: Means “White of Black” and is a white champagne made from either Pinot Noir or both Pinot Noir and pinot Meunier(both are red grapes); usually more full-bodied than BLANC de BLANC .

FRIZZANTE: a semi-sparkling wine with less carbonation than opther champagne styles.

New Arrivals – Tis The Season

    By admin | November 13, 2008

It’s getting close to the Holiday season and we’re starting to get our seasonal beers in stock.

First up is the Samuel Adams Chocolate Bock.

After using a centuries old brewing process, called Krausening, we slowly aged the beer on a bed of rare dark cocoa nibs from Felchlin®, a renowned Swiss chocolatier. Known for their quality, these wild cocoa nibs are harvested from the jungles of Northern Bolivia where they grow in their original forests. They impart complex aromas and flavors of chocolate, honey and vanilla in the beer. The resulting beer, Samuel Adams Chocolate Bock, has a big, malty character that is combined with the subtle sweetness of chocolate, giving this brew a complex full-body taste with a velvety finish.

Next up is the Breckenridge Brewery Christmas Ale.

    breckenridge christmas ale-50

My “Beer Guy” (Steve) loves this beer. Here’s what he says about it:

“This is one of the very BEST beers I’ve ever had. I personally love quite a few of the beers from the Breckenridge Brewery, but this one is my favorite.

This beer has a clear mahogany color and a frothy beige head are clear indications of the quality brew you are about to enjoy. The spiciness of the hops is apparent in the aroma and is surprisingly evident in the initial taste as well. The flavor soon mellows into a warming malty concoction with some raisin and pear sweetness. The mouthfeel remains full through the entire experience and is balanced well with the carbonation.

So my advice is when it is chilly and you are trying to warm your spirit, make sure to get yourself a hearty and strong Christmas Ale from Breckenridge and Northside Liquor.”

Also, don’t forget that our Christmas Gift Sets have been arriving so be sure to grab yours before they’re all gone.
